Brush piles and down trees can be a heaven for small animals like mice and field rats, that will ultimately attract snakes and other predators. Snakes move from area to area looking for their next meal, and they also need sun to catch their pray. This means that the snakes in the brush pile on the edge of the wood will come out into the field or yard. Many young children are bitten by snakes every year, most of these bites happen near brush piles or clutter and with multiple types of venomous snakes in North Carolina this means a trip to the emergency room. By using a forestry mulcher and removing the large piles of brush and downed trees you are taking away the space needed for these animals to sit and wait, reducing the chances of contact with them. But don’t worry, they will just go deeper into the woods to find an area more suited to their liking, where they will be less likely to encounter people.
