Land Leveling & Grading in Shelby, NC

Cleveland County’s red clay soil and wooded residential lots call for a different kind of clearing — one that levels and compacts in the same pass.

Smooth and level land in shelby nc

Shelby is Cleveland County’s largest city, and the land around it reflects everything that makes Western Carolina property both valuable and challenging to work with. You’ve got residential lots sitting on heavy red clay, wooded parcels that have grown back dense since they were last cut, and older rural properties on the county’s edge that haven’t been touched in years. Getting cleared, level ground here isn’t just about grinding brush. It’s about dealing with clay that compacts unevenly and root systems that come back if you don’t go deep enough.

BillyGoat Mulching operates out of Casar, just over 20 miles from Shelby, and we work regularly in Cleveland County. We use a subsoil mulching process that grinds down vegetation, stumps, and roots six to ten inches below the surface and then levels and compacts the ground in the same pass. What you’re left with is smooth, firm land — seed-ready or build-ready — without needing to call a second contractor for grading.

Cleveland County’s red clay responds well to the subsoil mulching process. The organic matter we grind and bury improves the clay structure over time, making it less sticky, better-draining, and more workable than if you’d just cleared the surface and left it.

HOW IT WORKS

The subsoil mulching attachment uses a counter-rotating rotor fitted with carbide-point teeth. It grinds through trees, brush, stumps, and root systems down to six to ten inches below grade. A fixed blade inside the hood shaves the material extremely fine, and it drops into the soil profile rather than sitting on top.

Once the grinding pass is complete, the rotor reverses and transitions into leveling mode. It skims from the high spots into the low spots — smoothing out the uneven terrain that’s almost always left behind after heavy root systems are removed. A smooth roller follows and firms the surface.

The result in Shelby-area clay is typically a firm, level surface that’s considerably easier to seed or build on than what you’d get from a surface-only clearing job.

THE BILLYGOAT DIFFERENCE — ONE CONTRACTOR, ONE VISIT

Hiring a forestry mulcher and then calling a separate grading contractor is the standard approach around Shelby — and it adds up fast. You’re coordinating schedules, paying two mobilization charges, and waiting twice. BillyGoat’s subsoil mulching process handles both in one visit. The machine clears and levels sequentially, and you pay for one contractor’s time instead of two.

COST COMPARISON: Traditional approach (forestry mulcher + grading contractor): $8,800–$12,500+ BillyGoat subsoil mulching (clearing + leveling + compaction): Starting at $4,500

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Does BillyGoat work on smaller residential lots in Shelby? A: Yes. We don’t have a minimum lot size. Smaller, heavily wooded lots close to subdivisions are some of the most common jobs we do in Cleveland County. If it’s overgrown and needs to be cleared flat, we can handle it.

Q: Cleveland County has a lot of red clay. Does that affect how leveling works? A: It affects what you get after leveling, in a good way. Red clay firms up well when compacted, and burying organic matter into it — which subsoil mulching does automatically — makes it less dense and sticky over time. Most customers find the surface drains better and is easier to work with than it was before we started.

Q: How close are you to Shelby? A: We’re based in Casar, about 20 miles from Shelby. Most Cleveland County jobs are well within our standard service area and don’t require unusual transport fees.

Q: Do you handle both residential and commercial properties in Shelby? A: Yes. We work with homeowners clearing lots, contractors preparing sites, and commercial property owners dealing with overgrown acreage. The process is the same — the scale varies.

If you have property in Shelby or anywhere in Cleveland County that needs to be cleared and leveled, BillyGoat Mulching can handle both in one visit.
