Land Leveling & Grading — Clearing and Flat Ground in One Visit

Most people hire two contractors to get cleared, level land. BillyGoat Mulching does it all in one pass.

Most land clearing jobs end the same way: the forestry mulcher finishes, the brush is gone, and you’re left staring at a bumpy, uneven surface covered in grindings. Then you call a grading contractor. Then you wait. Then you pay again.

BillyGoat Mulching works differently. We use a specialized subsoil mulching process that grinds everything down, trees, stumps, brush, roots and then levels and compacts the ground as part of the same pass. By the time we pull off your property, you have smooth, firm, seed-ready or build-ready ground. One contractor. One visit.

We serve property owners, contractors, and developers across Western North Carolina and into upstate South Carolina. Whether you’re clearing a wooded lot for construction, reclaiming an overgrown pasture, or cleaning up acreage that’s gotten out of hand, we can handle the clearing and the leveling together, so you don’t have to coordinate multiple crews

HOW IT WORKS

The process starts with our subsoil mulching attachment, a counter-rotating rotor fitted with carbide-point teeth. It grinds through trees, stumps, brush, and roots down to six to ten inches below the surface. A fixed blade inside the hood shaves all that material extremely fine. The organic matter drops into the soil profile rather than sitting on top of it.

After grinding, we switch to leveling mode. The rotor reverses direction and skims soil from the high spots down into the low spots, smoothing out any rises and dips left behind by root systems, stumps, or uneven terrain. A smooth roller follows the rotor and applies consistent downward pressure, firming the surface as we go.

The finish grade depends on what you need. For seeding and pasture work, we leave the surface seed-bed firm, walkable, with a slight footprint. For construction and site prep, we can compact to building-grade standard with a final pass using the roller engaged and the rotor off. Either way, the surface is uniform, flat, and ready for what comes next.

Because we’re burying the organic material instead of piling it up or hauling it off, the soil actually improves. Roots are destroyed at the source, which means far less regrowth down the road. And the fine organic matter incorporated into the soil adds nutrients and improves drainage over time.

  • Fully insured with general liability coverage for residential and commercial projects

THE BILLYGOAT DIFFERENCE — ONE CONTRACTOR, ONE VISIT

Traditional land clearing leaves you with a rough, uneven surface and a second bill on the way. Forestry mulchers grind what’s above the ground, but they don’t address the terrain. For a flat, usable finish, you typically need a grading contractor to come back with a box blade, a skid steer, and their own schedule.

BillyGoat combines both steps into one. The subsoil mulching process handles clearing and leveling in sequence during the same visit. You get smooth, compacted ground without the wait, without the second contractor, and at a price that’s typically well below what you’d pay if you hired the two jobs separately.

COST COMPARISON: Traditional approach (forestry mulcher + grading contractor): $8,800–$12,500+ BillyGoat subsoil mulching (clearing + leveling + compaction): Starting at $4,500

WHAT YOU GET

  • Cleared land with all surface vegetation, brush, stumps, and roots removed
  • A smooth, level surface graded to your specification — seed-ready or build-ready
  • Compacted ground firm enough for seeding, construction, or immediate use
  • Organic matter incorporated into the soil profile, improving soil health and drainage
  • Dramatically reduced regrowth because root systems are destroyed below the surface

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What’s the difference between land leveling and land grading?

In practice, the terms are often used interchangeably. Land grading typically refers to reshaping the surface to control drainage and create a consistent slope. Land leveling means making the surface flat or even. BillyGoat’s subsoil mulching process accomplishes both — we smooth out the high and low spots left behind by stumps and root systems and establish a consistent, firm surface grade suitable for your intended use.

How flat can you get the ground?

We can achieve a smooth, consistent surface across most properties. Extreme slopes, large rock outcroppings, or significant changes in elevation may limit how flat the result is — those situations call for a walk-through before we quote. For most wooded lots, overgrown pastures, and brushy acreage, the result is noticeably flat and even.

Do I need a separate grading contractor after BillyGoat finishes?

In most cases, no. Our leveling pass is built into the subsoil mulching process. After grinding, the rotor skims soil from high spots into low spots and the roller compacts the surface. For standard residential and light commercial projects, this delivers a grade ready for seeding or construction without a second contractor.

Can you level land without first doing the clearing?

Our leveling capability is part of the subsoil mulching process — it’s not a standalone grading service. We clear and level together as part of the same machine pass. If your land is already cleared and just needs grading, we’re probably not the right fit. But if you need clearing and leveling both, we’re almost certainly faster and cheaper than hiring two separate contractors.

If you’re looking for cleared, level ground without the hassle of coordinating two separate contractors, BillyGoat Mulching is the call to make.
